How will therapy help me and my teen?

Getting your teen a counselor allows them to express their feelings about the things that are upsetting to them, or that they are experiencing at school, work, or home without fear of being judged or getting in trouble. It also allows them to be honest about things that they may have done without the fear of punishment from their parents.

It’s important to explain to your child that therapy is a safe place and that you will not be questioning what they have said in therapy, or what the counselor has said to them. Their counselor is not allowed to talk about what’s happening in the sessions and can only give a snapshot for the parents of possible outcomes, with few exceptions like active suicidal plans, and reports of abuse or neglect.
